A newcomer to many gardeners, this little holly is a super plant, and we think a really good choice for use as evergreen topiary balls and domes. It is similar to Japanese holly and can be used in much the same way, as a trouble-free alternative to box (Buxus). However, Ilex max. ‘Kanehirae’ has rather different foliage. The leaves are longer, oval and slightly toothed; it also proves a bit quicker-growing. Clip it annually once established and it will soon form tight, evergreen shapes ideal for adding year-round structure to beds and borders.
