In many ways box is the perfect small evergreen hedge. Quick-growing and dense, it responds brilliantly to clipping and is happy in situations ranging from full sun to shade. It really is so versatile and useful. It’s also highly resistant to drought and heat once established; no wonder it is still among the most popular hedging plants and a key part of many European formal gardens. We simply can’t imagine grand ViIllandry in France or the parterres at Villa Lante in Italy without it. On a smaller, more realistic scale, it’s so useful for defining garden areas, providing low, step-over boundaries or, grown taller, making a fine hedge to about waist height. In spring, it is also delightful when young bright-green shoots contrast with the dark-green mature growth. In recent years pest and disease issues have somewhat reduced the use of box, but there are now some ways of overcoming these problems.
