Elaeagnus x submacrophylla makes an incredible and fairly unusual choice of hedge, with its shimmering, silvery, evergreen foliage, scented bell-shaped flowers and occasional edible red berries – it has something for every season. It is also dead easy to establish, standing sun or light shade and withstanding dry spells once it is growing away well. We also find it grows reasonably quickly.
In spring, the new growth is at its most metallic and lustrous, while in autumn the sweet scent from Ebbinge’s silverberry’s otherwise inconspicuous flowers will stop passers-by in their tracks. In winter the evergreen foliage makes a great backdrop to the garden while, in late summer, little edible berries can be found amid the leaves. Ebbinge’s silverberry holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
