Its brilliant, glossy red new shoots in spring mean that few plants suitable for hedging or screening can compete with dramatic Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ as far as instant impact is concerned. Also known as the Christmas berry ‘Red Robin’, it makes a good hedge, but plants may also be grown as a small standard tree or kept lightly trimmed as a shaped specimen. Easy to grow, vigorous and evergreen, its super-shiny red shoots turn rich green during summer as they age; individual leaves are oval, toothed and up to 10cm long, held on dark red stems.
Clusters of white flowers may appear in spring, particularly on unpruned plants – red fruits follow in autumn and winter. Grown as a free-standing shrub, it makes an open, dome-shaped plant. The process of regular trimming promotes denser growth and better spring colour. Late frosts occasionally damage shoots but the shrub soon recovers. Christmas berry ‘Red Robin’ holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
