We think beech is a really brilliant deciduous plant for topiary. Regular trimming to shape keeps these plants compact and they make impressive balls and domes that can fit into highly formal planting schemes, as well as more relaxed gardens. Either way, these shapes can help anchor the planting. Fagus sylvatica is a UK native and is at its succulent best in spring, as its translucent green foliage emerges. In summer, leaves give topiary shapes superb solidity, while in autumn its appeal changes as the domes and balls reveal their branch structure. A few coppery leaves cling onto branches through the winter. Beech holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
