You can easily understand why West Himalayan (Betula utlis susbp. jacquemontti) birch is among the most popular of all multi-stemmed trees. Growing in this way simply multiplies the famed notoriety of this tree for its dazzling white bark that is silky-smooth to the touch, peeling away in curling scrolls. Plant just one of these specimens and you have a feature that is highly appealing year-round; plant three and you create a magical copse of snow-white stems particularly impressive in autumn and winter. Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii has other great qualities through the year too. In spring, branches are strung with dangling catkins while in autumn the foliage takes on butter yellow tints before falling. It’s also easy to grow and makes a light canopy in summer that you can easily plant below.
