A brilliant plant for adding winter interest to the garden, Cornelian cherry is a large deciduous shrub or small tree and makes a tough, undemanding choice. It has a twiggy, rather dense broad habit; in late winter masses of rounded clusters of tiny, bright-yellow flowers adorn bare stems, creating a haze of gold, in one of the first signs of spring. Each flower cluster is around 2-3cm across.
After the flowers fade, small, initially glossy oval leaves emerge; these later serve as a green foil for red cherry-like fruits which appear in summer and are edible, although usually bitter-tasting. Leaves may turn purplish before falling in autumn. Cornelian cherry usually flowers better after a decent summer. Use Cornus mas in informal plantings, as a backdrop to borders or an understorey below deciduous trees as long as it’s not too shady.
