If you are looking for deciduous topiary that has a distinctly rustic and native feel, we think field maple is a brilliant – and rather unusual – choice that will impress visitors to your garden. Acer campestre is a tough, easy-to-grow plant that stands clipping and trimming well, and has high wildlife values. Shaped into balls and domes, field maple can be planted in borders to anchor softer planting through summer, and then in autumn, as its three-lobed green foliage turns to golden-yellow, it is an eye-catching feature. In winter, effects are more subtle with the branches forming an appealing transparent tracery. Field maple holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
