Portuguese laurel is one of the finest evergreens for trimming. We think this particular selection is the best one to choose for topiary balls and domes for sun or part-shade. Prunus lusitanica ‘Myrtifolia’ (also known as P. lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’) is rather more compact in the way it grows and has glossy dark-green leaves that are slender and rather pointed in shape, with lovely reddish stems. It is tough and easy to grow and, shaped regularly, makes good dense growth. Relax your pruning a bit and you will get sprays of white, bee-attracting flowers. This selection of Portuguese laurel holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
