No collection of plants suitable for topiary domes is complete without one of the finest choices of all, yew. We love it! This UK-native conifer with its needle-like dark-green leaves is perfectly suited for trimming. It forms dense, tight shapes, easily grown anywhere that is not too waterlogged, in sun or shade. It also tolerates dry conditions well, once established. In spring, enjoy the bright-green new shoots that contrast beautifully with the mature foliage. Use yew balls and domes individually, in pairs, or dot through plantings for contrast and structure.
Position three balls of different sizes together and – hey. presto! – you have cloud pruned topiary. So adaptable, so dependable. Taxus baccata holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants; toxic, so do not ingest or grow near livestock.
