Among the finest of all small deciduous trees, Paperbark maple makes a slow-growing but superbly ornamental choice with a dome-shaped canopy. It is grown chiefly for its wonderful peeling coppery bark which is at its spectacular best in winter when backlit by the sun. In mid to late spring the new tri-lobed leaves of Acer griseum emerge; these may initially be attractively pink-tinted, while in autumn the foliage turns to dazzling orange and crimson before falling. The paperbark maple holds an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which is given only to the best garden plants.
