The rustic charms of hazel are not to be underestimated, for this UK native is a useful deciduous shrub or small garden tree. Corylus avellana forms a dense, suckering, vase-shaped plant, branching twiggy stems arising from the ground. In late winter bare twigs are draped with showy male catkins before the broad canopy of large oval leaves emerges, a glowing sight in spring when foliage is soft and young.
By late summer crops of nuts form which ripen in autumn. Plants are best kept as a tidy coppice: sturdy stems should be pruned out in winter to make useful plant supports. Keeping the clump open allows woodland perennials such as snowdrops, hellebores and ferns to thrive in the cool shade below. Hazel also supports and attracts a range of wildlife to the garden. They can be used in a shrubbery or to create a short avenue for a nut walk.
